A lot of us do not even know we have been traumatized. We just grow up thinking what went on in our own families was the same as other families. It is our normal. Not until we interact with the larger world — in school, jobs and outside activities do we get a sense of it not being what everyone else has experienced. By that time we have learned behaviors to cope in moments of crisis or survival. Those ways may not be serving us now.
